Asbestos Hazards and Controls (OSHA)

Asbestos was once a go-to material in US construction and manufacturing for its heat resistance, strength, and insulating qualities, and it still lingers in countless older buildings and products today. The danger comes when asbestos-containing materials are disturbed, releasing microscopic fibers that can cause asbestosis, mesothelioma, and other incurable diseases years after exposure. Because these risks are invisible and often delayed, proper training is critical to keeping workers safe. This course covers how to define and recognize asbestos, the federal OSHA regulations that govern it, the health hazards of exposure, the controls and PPE used to prevent it, and the employer and employee responsibilities for working safely around it.

About This Course

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral once prized for its heat resistance, strength, and insulating properties, which is why it ended up in everything from floor tiles and shingles to pipe insulation and automotive parts. It's also the most well-known workplace carcinogen, and disturbing asbestos-containing materials can release fibers linked to serious, often incurable diseases. While many uses are now restricted in the US, legacy asbestos remains widespread in older buildings, so knowing how to recognize it and protect yourself is still essential.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:
  • Define asbestos and identify its common types
  • Name the federal OSHA regulations associated with asbestos safety
  • Recognize the health impacts of exposure to asbestos particles
  • Identify engineering and administrative controls used to prevent exposure
  • Understand what personal protective equipment is required
  • Explain procedures in the event of accidental exposure
  • Explain employer and employee responsibilities
