Oil & Gas Safety Training

Alberta OHS says workers in the province are exposed to hydrogen sulphide most often during drilling and production of natural gas, crude oil and petroleum products. So gas hazards come first here, followed by the work around them.

• H2S. The 2-hour H2S course covers detection, safe working limits, respiratory protection and emergency response. The certificate is valid for 3 years.
• Confined spaces. In Alberta, anyone assigned confined space duties must be trained by a competent person (OHS Code s. 46). The awareness course covers hazards, atmospheric testing, entry permits and rescue roles.
• Ground disturbance. In Alberta, before the ground is disturbed, your employer must contact the owner of any pipeline within 30 metres and wait for it to be located and marked (OHS Code s. 447).
• Dangerous goods. If you handle, ship or transport dangerous goods, you need TDG training and a certificate (TDG Regulations s. 6.1).

If you may work around sour gas, start with the H2S course. Then see confined space, H2S and gas detection training for gas monitors and entry, ground disturbance training if you dig, and TDG training if you move product.

• Our H2S course is not H2S Alive. Energy Safety Canada runs H2S Alive as a one-day classroom course, and Alberta's H2S bulletin recommends it along with first aid. If a site asks for H2S Alive by name, book that course.
• Online courses cover the theory. Your employer still trains you on the site's equipment and procedures.
