Basic Electrical Safety (OSHA)

Electricity powers nearly every worksite, running quietly through the panels, tools, and equipment that workers rely on each day. That constant presence is exactly what makes it easy to underestimate, and a damaged cord, an open panel, or a wet surface can turn an everyday task into a serious injury in a fraction of a second. Proper training helps workers who are not qualified electricians recognize these hazards and respond the right way before an incident occurs. This course covers how electricity works and affects the body, common worksite hazards, arc flash, hazard identification and controls, PPE, and emergency response for electrical incidents.

About This Course

Electricity is present on nearly every worksite, running through the panels, tools, overhead lines, and equipment you work beside every day. Most of the time it does its job quietly, which is exactly why the hazards are so easy to underestimate, and when something goes wrong it can happen in a fraction of a second. This course is built for workers who are not qualified electricians but who work near electrical equipment, tools, and systems as part of their daily job, giving you the knowledge to recognize hazards and work safely around them.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:
• Explain how electricity works and why it creates hazards on the worksite
• Describe how electrical current affects the body and why even small shocks require medical attention
• Identify the key regulations and standards that govern electrical safety in the US
• Distinguish between the roles and responsibilities of workers, supervisors, qualified workers, and employers
• Recognize common electrical hazards, including power lines, damaged equipment, temporary power setups, and wet conditions
• Explain what an arc flash is, recognize arc flash warning labels, understand approach boundaries, and identify the controls used to reduce arc flash risk
• Conduct a basic hazard identification and risk assessment using tools like a risk matrix or field-level hazard assessment
• Apply the hierarchy of controls, respect electrical approach boundaries, and understand your responsibilities under your employer's Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures
• Select and inspect the appropriate PPE for working near electrical hazards
• Respond correctly to an electrical emergency, including what to do and what not to do when someone has been shocked
