Boom Truck (OSHA)

Boom trucks are truck-mounted cranes that lift and place heavy materials on construction, utility, and industrial job sites across the United States. When lifts are rushed, inspections are skipped, or load limits are ignored, these machines can tip over, contact powerlines, or drop loads, often with fatal results. Proper training gives operators and crews the knowledge to recognize these hazards and keep every lift under control. This course covers boom truck fundamentals, major hazards, inspections, setup and stability, load charts, rigging awareness, and emergency procedures.

About This Course

Boom trucks are truck-mounted cranes used to lift and place heavy materials on construction, utility, and industrial job sites across the United States. They are powerful and versatile, but they also come with serious hazards like tip-overs, powerline contact, falling loads, and struck-by incidents. • Identify the major hazards associated with boom truck operations
  • Perform basic pre-use inspections and recognize unsafe equipment conditions
  • Explain how stability, leverage, and outrigger setup affect tip-over risk
  • Use safe setup practices, including cribbing and outrigger pads, to support lifting operations
  • Apply lift planning basics, including load awareness, exclusion zones, and communication roles
  • Describe safe operating practices to prevent struck-by injuries and dropped loads, and
  • Recognize when conditions are unsafe and follow general emergency response procedures
