Who this course is for

This course is for anyone who wants to lead from the role they have now. You don't need to manage people. The course treats leadership as personal: being a good role model, taking responsibility for your actions, communicating well and adding more to your organization.

The skills apply to whatever role you have now and to the roles you move into later.

What you will learn

Part 1 has five topics. By the end, you should be able to:

  • Keep your customers up to date on key information, progress and status
  • Ask for other people's thoughts and opinions when it matters
  • Judge whether a creative idea or suggestion will work in practice
  • Review your own actions and behaviour for integrity
  • Work out what you need to change to support your organization's strategy

Course length, pass mark and certificate

Plan for about 50 minutes. Short tests run through the course to reinforce what you learn, and you need 80% to earn your certificate. If you don't reach it the first time, you can repeat the course twice. When you pass, you can download and print a certificate of completion.

Part 2 and other leadership courses

Part 1 and Part 2 are separate courses, each with its own certificate. Neither lists a prerequisite. Compare your options:

  • Building Your Leadership Skills - Part 2: about 50 minutes, same format. Covers supporting your organization's vision and strategy, a process for managing conflict, learning from someone who handles conflict well and being an inspiring role model.
  • Leadership Essentials - Part 1 and Part 2: about 60 minutes each. Written for people in managerial or leadership roles. Part 1 covers integrity, balancing your leader and employee roles, and linking team goals to strategy. Part 2 covers innovation, keeping your top talent and weighing key decisions.
  • Leadership Fundamentals: about 60 minutes. Traits of effective leaders, behaviours that undermine leadership, leading in a crisis and case studies.
  • Emerging Leaders: about 45 minutes. For people stepping into their first leadership role. Topics include avoiding micromanagement, vision and execution.
  • Building Trust and Respect: about 50 minutes. For leaders and managers who want to build trust with their employees.

No. The course is about personal leadership, and it says outright that you don't need direct employees to use these skills.

Yes. Score 80% or higher and you can download and print a certificate of completion. You can repeat the course twice if you need to.

What does Part 2 cover?

Supporting your organization's vision and strategy, managing conflict with others, learning from someone who is good at conflict management and being an inspiring role model. It is a separate 50-minute course with its own certificate.

Is there a time limit for online courses?

Everyone learns at a different pace and everyone retains information differently. When you take a course online, you go at your own speed. If you get to a certain point and don’t fully understand the material, you can pause and go back for a review. On the other hand, if everything makes perfect sense, you can go straight through the entire course right to the test.

How does virtual proctoring/testing with webcam monitoring work?

When you start your test, you will be monitored via your webcam. If you disappear from the screen or appear to be consulting another device or other material, you will be disqualified from the course.
