Corporate & General Workplace Safety Training

Violence and harassment rules apply to offices too. In Alberta, employers must have a violence and harassment prevention plan and train workers to recognize violence and harassment, respond to it and report it (OHS Code s. 390 and 391). In Ontario, employers must have violence and harassment policies, review them at least once a year, and give workers information and instruction on them (OHSA s. 32.0.1 and 32.0.5).

Hazard assessment comes next. Alberta employers must identify existing and potential hazards before work begins and involve affected workers in the assessment (OHS Code s. 7 and 8).

Match the course to the role:

• Harassment and violence: Workplace Harassment and Violence Prevention VR 10.1 takes about 2 hours and defines harassment and violence under the Alberta OHS Act. The Respectful Workplace (about 60 minutes) covers Ontario Bill 168, BC Bill 14 and the Canadian Human Rights Act.
• Hazards: Hazard Identification, Assessment, and Control (about 2 hours) covers risk assessment, controls, and formal versus field-level hazard assessments.
• Team leads and supervisors: Conflict Resolution: Getting Along in the Workplace (about 45 minutes) and Building Your Leadership Skills - Part 1 (about 50 minutes). BCMSA - Due Diligence for Supervisors (about 3.5 hours) explains a supervisor's legal responsibilities.
• More options: workplace culture and compliance courses and workplace safety awareness courses.

These courses cover general knowledge. Your employer still trains you on its own prevention plan, policies and reporting procedures, which Alberta requires as part of violence and harassment training.
