Combustible Dust - OSHA

Combustible dust is created by everyday work like grinding, sanding, milling, and conveying, and it builds up in places most people never think to look. When a fine dust cloud meets an ignition source inside a collector, silo, or duct, the resulting explosion can shake loose the dust settled on beams and ledges and trigger a second, far more destructive blast through the occupied areas of a plant. Workers who can recognize accumulation, unsafe cleaning methods, and uncontrolled ignition sources are often the reason these incidents get prevented. This course covers what combustible dust is, how primary and secondary explosions develop, where dust hides in a facility, the Dust Hazard Analysis, housekeeping and ignition source controls, and how to respond to a dust fire or smoldering event.

What You'll Learn

  • What Is Combustible Dust
  • How Dust Explosions Happen
  • Where Combustible Dust Is Found
  • Hazard Recognition and the Dust Hazard Analysis
  • Prevention and Controls
  • Roles, Responsibilities, and Emergency Response

About This Course

Sugar, flour, sawdust, and aluminum shavings look harmless sitting in a bag or on a floor, but ground fine enough and suspended in the air, they can ignite and explode. Combustible dust incidents happen in ordinary facilities doing ordinary work, and the hazard often hides overhead where nobody is looking. This course explains how dust explosions happen, where the hazard builds up, and the controls that keep it from becoming a fire or explosion.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Define combustible dust and explain why ordinary materials become explosion hazards when finely divided
  • Describe the five elements of the dust explosion pentagon and how a primary explosion leads to a secondary explosion
  • Identify the industries, materials, and locations in a facility where combustible dust accumulates
  • Recognize the warning signs of a combustible dust hazard and explain what a Dust Hazard Analysis is
  • List the main controls for combustible dust: dust control, ignition source control, and damage control
  • Describe worker and supervisor responsibilities and the correct response to a dust fire or explosion

Everyone learns at a different pace and everyone retains information differently. When you take a course online, you go at your own speed. On the other hand, if everything makes perfect sense, you can go straight through the entire course right to the test.

How does virtual proctoring/testing with webcam monitoring work?

When you start your test, you will be monitored via your webcam. If you disappear from the screen or appear to be consulting another device or other material, you will be disqualified from the course.
