Concrete and Masonry Safety (OSHA)

Concrete and masonry work is one of the oldest trades, but its everyday materials carry hidden dangers, from the delayed burns of wet concrete and the lung damage caused by silica dust to the sudden collapse of formwork and shoring. Training helps workers spot these hazards early and know when to bring in a competent person. This US-based course covers site responsibilities, the chemical and dust hazards of concrete and masonry, equipment and fall risks, and the protective equipment that keeps workers safe.

About This Course

Concrete and masonry work is one of the oldest trades on earth, but the materials that built the world carry hazards that are not always obvious. Wet concrete can burn skin hours after contact, fine silica dust can permanently scar the lungs, and the temporary structures that hold a fresh pour can fail in seconds. This OSHA aligned course walks through those hazards and the practical controls that keep concrete and masonry workers safe on the job.

By the end of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Describe how OSHA assigns safety duties across a worksite
  • Recognize the chemical burn and skin hazards of wet concrete and mortar
  • Explain what respirable crystalline silica is and why it is so dangerous
  • Identify the main controls used to keep silica dust out of your lungs
  • Recognize why formwork, falsework, and shoring can fail, and who is responsible for them
  • Identify the hazards of rebar, concrete pumps, and placement equipment
  • Describe safe manual handling practices for masonry materials
  • Recognize fall and scaffold hazards and the protections used against them
  • List the personal protective equipment commonly required for concrete and masonry work

When you start your test, you will be monitored via your webcam. If you disappear from the screen or appear to be consulting another device or other material, you will be disqualified from the course.
