Online Training

Earth Movers (CAN)

Earthmoving equipment like excavators, dozers, loaders, graders, and haul trucks does the heavy work behind nearly every Canadian construction, mining, and site-work project. These machines are powerful, they have large blind spots, and they cannot stop or react the way a person can, which means a single struck-by, rollover, or utility contact can be fatal for operators and workers on foot alike. Awareness training gives everyone who shares ground with this equipment a common understanding of where the danger is and when to stop and get help. In this course, we'll cover the main types of earthmoving equipment and their signature hazards, the roles and responsibilities that govern the work in Canada, the five hazard families of struck-by, rollover, caught-between, utility contact, and the environment, and the everyday defences that keep a site safe.

About This Course

Excavators, dozers, loaders, graders, and haul trucks move the earth that Canadian construction, mining, and site-work projects are built on. They are also some of the most powerful machines you'll ever share ground with, and they cannot stop, see, or think the way a person can. Whether you operate this equipment or work on foot nearby, this awareness-level course helps you recognize how earthmoving machines cause harm and how to stay out of harm's way.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:
• Identify the main types of earthmoving equipment and the signature hazard of each
• Recognize blind spots, swing zones, and other struck-by hazards around machines
• Describe how rollovers happen and how ROPS and seatbelts protect operators
• Explain the locate-and-daylight process for working near buried utilities
• Recognize how Canadian weather changes ground conditions and visibility
• List the everyday defences that keep an earthmoving site safe, and know when to stop work and get help

Everyone learns at a different pace and everyone retains information differently. When you take a course online, you go at your own speed. On the other hand, if everything makes perfect sense, you can go straight through the entire course right to the test.

How does virtual proctoring/testing with webcam monitoring work?

When you start your test, you will be monitored via your webcam. If you disappear from the screen or appear to be consulting another device or other material, you will be disqualified from the course. The company responsible for virtual proctoring is Integrity Advocate. You can find out more about how their system works here.
