Hot Work Safety - CAN

Hot work covers a wide range of essential jobs on Canadian worksites, from welding and cutting to grinding, brazing, soldering, and torch-applied roofing. Though common, these tasks come with serious risks: a single spark can travel further than expected, ignite hidden combustibles, and cause fires that don't show themselves for hours. Without proper permits, fire watches, PPE, and pre-work precautions, hot work can lead to devastating fires, explosions, severe burns, and toxic exposures. This course covers what hot work is, the hazards involved, the permit system, fire watch duties, PPE requirements, equipment safety, special high-risk situations, and emergency response, so workers, supervisors, and bystanders alike can keep themselves and their worksites safe.

About This Course

Hot work is one of the most common jobs on a Canadian worksite, and also one of the most dangerous when proper precautions aren't followed. A single spark can ignite hidden combustibles that smolder for hours before flaring up, leading to fires, explosions, serious injuries, and major property damage. This course is designed not just for welders and torch operators, but for anyone who works near hot work, requests it, supervises it, or shares a building with it.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Define hot work and list common examples
  • Describe the main hazards of hot work
  • Explain how a hot work permit works
  • Identify the key precautions that must be in place before work starts
  • Describe the role and duties of a fire watch
  • List the PPE used for hot work
  • Recognize special hot work situations that need extra care
  • Explain your role if a fire starts
