Heat and Cold Stress (OSHA)
Heat and cold are two of the most common hazards workers face on the job, whether they're out in the summer sun or bundled up against a winter wind. Left unrecognized, both can escalate fast, turning a mild case of heat exhaustion or a chill into a life-threatening emergency like heat stroke or severe hypothermia. Knowing how to spot the early warning signs and respond correctly is what keeps a rough day from becoming a dangerous one, and that is exactly what this training builds. In this awareness course, you'll learn how the body regulates temperature, how to recognize heat and cold illness, prevention measures like Water, Rest, and Shade and proper layering, and what to do in an emergency, including when to call 911.

What You'll Learn
- How the Body Regulates Temperature (Thermoregulation)
- Heat Stress: Hazards and Warning Signs
- Heat Exhaustion vs. Heat Stroke
- Cold Stress: Hazards and Warning Signs
- Hypothermia and Its Stages
- Localized Cold Injuries (Frostbite, Trench Foot, and More)
- Heat Stress Prevention and Controls (Water, Rest, Shade)
- Cold Stress Prevention and Controls (Layer Up, Stay Dry, Warm Up)
- Emergency Response and Communication
- When to Call 911
About This Course
Heat and cold are both recognized workplace hazards, and either one can cause serious harm to anyone working outdoors or in a space that isn't climate controlled. The good news is that these injuries are largely preventable when you can spot the early warning signs and take simple action before a rough day turns into an emergency. This awareness course will help you recognize heat and cold hazards, respond at a basic level, and get help fast.
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
• Describe how the body regulates its temperature
• Recognize the warning signs of heat and cold illness
• Explain the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke
• Identify prevention measures for both heat and cold
• List the steps to take in an emergency, including when to call 911
