Maritime Cold Water Survival - OSHA

Cold water is one of the most serious and ever-present hazards facing anyone who works on or near American waters. Without the right knowledge and equipment, a fall overboard or a vessel emergency can turn fatal long before rescue arrives, even in conditions that don't seem immediately threatening. This is where training comes in. In this course, learners will explore the dangers of cold water immersion, the essential lifesaving equipment used in American maritime settings, and the proven survival techniques that give workers their best chance of getting home safely.

About This Course

Working on or near water in the United States means cold water is always close by, and it can incapacitate a person far faster than most people realize. Understanding what happens to your body in cold water, knowing your equipment, and making the right decisions in those critical first minutes can be the difference between a survivable situation and a fatal one. This course covers the physiology of cold water immersion, the lifesaving equipment used in American maritime environments, and the survival techniques that give workers their best chance when things go wrong.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the four stages of cold water immersion
  • Explain the 1-10-1 principle and what it means for your survival
  • Identify the HELP and HUDDLE positions and when to use each
  • Describe the purpose and key features of lifejackets, immersion suits, EPIRBs, flares, and life rafts
  • List the steps to take if you go overboard
  • Describe how to signal rescuers effectively
  • Explain the role of U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Centers

Everyone learns at a different pace and everyone retains information differently. When you take a course online, you go at your own speed. On the other hand, if everything makes perfect sense, you can go straight through the entire course right to the test.

How does virtual proctoring/testing with webcam monitoring work?

When you start your test, you will be monitored via your webcam. If you disappear from the screen or appear to be consulting another device or other material, you will be disqualified from the course.
