Hot Work Safety - OSHA

Hot work is one of the most common jobs on a US worksite, covering welding, cutting, grinding, brazing, soldering, and torch-applied roofing. Sparks travel 35 feet or more and can smolder out of sight for hours, so a job that looked finished can turn into a building fire long after the crew has gone home. Training is what closes that gap, because permits, pre-work precautions, and a fire watch only protect people when everyone on site knows their part. Aligned with OSHA requirements under 29 CFR 1910 Subpart Q and 29 CFR 1926 Subpart J, this training covers hot work hazards, the permit system, fire watch duties, PPE, equipment safety, special hot work situations, roles and responsibilities, and emergency response.

About This Course

Hot work covers any job that uses an open flame, creates sparks, or produces enough heat to start a fire, including welding, cutting, grinding, brazing, soldering, and torch-applied roofing. Sparks can travel 35 feet or more and settle into hidden spaces, which means a fire can start hours after the crew has packed up and left. This training is written for US workplaces and reflects OSHA requirements under 29 CFR 1910 Subpart Q for general industry and 29 CFR 1926 Subpart J for construction, along with the consensus standards commonly applied to hot work, ANSI Z49.1 and NFPA 51B. Whether you perform hot work, supervise it, request it, or simply work nearby, you need to understand the hazards and the controls that keep everyone safe.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:
  • Define hot work and list common examples
  • Describe the main hazards of hot work
  • Explain how a hot work permit works
  • Identify the key precautions that must be in place before work starts
  • Describe the role and duties of a fire watch
  • List the PPE used for hot work
  • Recognize special hot work situations that need extra care, such as torch-applied roofing and confined space work
  • Identify who is responsible for what
  • Recognize what to do if a fire starts
  • Explain your role if a fire starts
