Knuckle Boom Crane
Knuckle boom cranes fold compactly behind a truck cab, reach over obstacles, and handle loads that would stop most equipment in its tracks, making them one of the most versatile lifting machines on any Canadian worksite. That same articulating design shifts the crane's centre of gravity with every movement, and a missed inspection, a bad rigging call, or contact with an overhead power line can turn a routine lift into a fatality. Proper training is what separates a safe, confident operator from a serious incident. This course covers knuckle boom crane types, pre-shift inspection, stability and load charts, rigging, safe operation, common hazards, and emergency procedures, aligned with Canadian standards including CSA Z150.3.

About This Course
Knuckle boom cranes, also known as articulating cranes, are among the most versatile pieces of lifting equipment on any Canadian worksite, able to fold compactly behind a truck cab, reach over obstacles, and handle a wide range of loads. That versatility comes with unique risks, from the articulating joint and hydraulic systems to the way these cranes constantly shift their centre of gravity. This course covers the safe operation practices, stability principles, rigging fundamentals, and emergency procedures every operator needs to work safely.
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Identify the major components of a knuckle boom crane
- Describe the principles of crane stability and how the articulating boom affects centre of gravity
- Explain how to read and apply a load chart for an articulating crane
- List the key items on a pre-shift inspection checklist
- Recognize common rigging configurations and their capacity implications
- Describe the proper setup, lift planning, and shutdown procedures
- Identify the most common hazards associated with knuckle boom crane operation
- Explain the minimum approach distances for overhead power lines
- Describe emergency procedures, including power line contact and tip-over response
