Lead Safety (OSHA)

Lead has been part of human life for thousands of years, and despite major regulatory progress, it remains a present hazard in many workplaces today, from renovation sites and industrial facilities to anywhere old pipes, paint, or batteries are found. When exposure goes unrecognized or uncontrolled, lead can quietly accumulate in the body and cause serious, lasting damage to the nervous system, kidneys, and reproductive health, with children being particularly vulnerable. That's where training comes in. This OSHA Compliant course covers what lead is, how it enters the body, where it can be found in the workplace, the regulations that govern its use, and the monitoring, controls, and personal protective equipment required to work with it safely.

About This Course

Lead has been used by humans for thousands of years, valued for properties like its low melting point, durability, and resistance to corrosion. But those same qualities come with a serious downside: lead is a potent neurotoxin, and even small amounts can accumulate in the body and cause lasting damage. This course covers what lead is, where it can be found, how it enters the body, and what you must do to protect yourself and others from exposure, including the regulations, monitoring processes, and controls that govern safe work with lead in the United States.

By the end of this OSHA compliant course, you should be able to:
• Describe what lead is and identify the forms it takes
• Explain the health risks associated with lead exposure, including effects on the nervous, reproductive, and cardiovascular systems
• Describe the regulations and legislation that govern lead use
• Recognize the three pathways through which lead enters the body
• Identify lead hazards in the workplace, including lead paint, pipes, soil, and batteries
• Explain the monitoring methods used to measure lead exposure
• Apply the hierarchy of controls to reduce lead exposure risk, and
• Select and properly use personal protective equipment when working with lead
