Pedestal-Mounted Crane Safety (CAN)

Pedestal-mounted cranes move heavy loads across a wide range of Canadian workplaces, from fixed jib cranes in plants to rope-luffing, articulating, and offshore cranes on docks, vessels, and platforms. Because lifting forces transfer through an engineered pedestal or support, a missed inspection, an unknown load, an unclear signal, or a lift outside the approved limits can lead to dropped loads, crushing injuries, electrical contact, or structural failure. That is why awareness of the equipment and safe-work principles matters before anyone takes part in a lift. In this course, learners will explore crane types and responsibilities, components and capacity, pre-use inspection and lift preparation, safe operation and work-zone control, and the abnormal conditions and emergency procedures that call for a full stop.

About This Course

Pedestal-mounted cranes appear in many forms across Canadian workplaces, from fixed jib cranes in plants to rope-luffing cranes on docks and articulating or offshore cranes mounted to vessels and platforms. What they share is that lifting forces transfer through a pedestal, pillar, deck foundation, or similar engineered support, which means the rules, standards, and operating requirements depend on the actual crane design, where it is installed, and the work being done. This awareness course builds a national safety foundation for recognizing these machines, understanding their capacity and stability, preparing and controlling lifts, and knowing when to stop.

In this course we'll cover:
  • Pedestal-mounted crane types, applications, responsibilities, and the rules that guide safe work
  • Main crane components, rated capacity, load radius, and stability
  • Pre-use inspection, work-area setup, and lift preparation
  • Safe operation, communication, load control, and work-zone control
  • Abnormal conditions, emergencies, shutdown, and securing the crane
