About This Course
Propane is one of the most common fuels used, from construction and agriculture to home barbecues and heaters. While incredibly useful to everyday life, it can also be very dangerous if used improperly. Whether transporting propane cylinders from the factory to a job site, using them to refuel your forklift at the end of the day, or planning for where to store extra cylinders, you must understand propane and how it works.
Participants will begin with the basics by learning what propane is, its characteristics, and its common uses at the workplace and home. They will then learn about the components of its two different withdrawal systems: vapour and liquid. By identifying these components, participants will understand how to fill and handle propane safely. Because this fuel source can be dangerous, there are essential rules and regulations to follow when handling propane. This course will cover the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Code, the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Act regulations, the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) standards, and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA).
Next, the course covers why these governing bodies are involved: to protect yourself and others from propane’s physical and environmental hazards. Learners will gain an understanding of safe transportation, whether traveling between job sites or within a single site. Even if propane isn’t moving, proper storage is crucial to prevent incidents. They will learn what to inspect before using a propane cylinder, such as damage, wear, or expired information. Once the propane is ready to be used, filled, or replaced, participants will be guided through a step-by-step process of disconnecting and connecting propane cylinders. Finally, the course will review the proper personal protective equipment needed when handling propane and basic emergency response procedures if an incident occurs.
For workers who must obtain a formal ROT certification, a TSSA-approved provider and in-person evaluation would still be required by Ontario regulatory standards.Course Requirements
