Roller Compactor Safety (CAN)

Roller compactors are essential to road building and civil construction, producing the dense, stable base and asphalt that roads depend on. Because these machines are involved in some of the most serious incidents on the job, from rollovers on slopes and soft edges to struck-by and crush injuries around ground crews, safe operation is not optional. Proper training helps operators recognize these hazards early and build the habits that prevent them, starting with the single most important rule: ROPS plus a worn seat belt, every time. This course covers the types of roller compactors and how compaction works, Canadian standards and responsibilities, the hazards of roller work and their controls, pre-operation inspection, safe operating procedures, working around others, shutdown and maintenance, and emergency response.

About This Course

Roller compactors look slow and simple, but they are involved in some of the most serious incidents in road building and civil construction. A rollover on a slope, a soft shoulder, or the edge of a fill can happen in seconds, and the outcome usually comes down to whether the machine had a Roll-Over Protective Structure (ROPS) and whether the operator was wearing their seat belt. This course covers how to operate roller compactors safely on Canadian job sites, from getting to know the machine and inspecting it to building safe operating habits and responding when something goes wrong.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify the main types of roller compactors and their typical applications
  • Name the major components of a roller compactor and their functions
  • Describe how compaction works
  • Explain the responsibilities of employers, supervisors, and operators
  • Recognize the main hazards of roller operation, especially rollover
  • Describe the pre-operation inspection and how to handle defects
  • Explain safe practices for slopes, edges, vibration use, and reversing
  • Describe the correct response to a rollover, a fire, a utility contact, and other emergencies
