About This Course

Underground facilities make modern life possible—delivering electricity, water, gas, and communications to homes and businesses. Because these systems are hidden, every excavation project, from small landscaping jobs to major construction, carries the risk of striking a buried line. Even minor damage can cause costly delays, environmental harm, or serious injury.

This course provides an essential introduction to utility line locating and marking. Learners will gain practical knowledge of the tools, techniques, and responsibilities involved in identifying underground facilities before digging. The course also emphasizes the legal requirements, industry best practices, and emergency response procedures needed to work safely and avoid damaging critical infrastructure.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Recognize the types and purposes of underground facilities and infrastructure
  • Understand the process of utility location and the importance of locate protocols
  • Identify hazards associated with excavation and ground disturbance
  • Compare the responsibilities of excavators, locators, utility owners, and one-call centers
  • List required safety equipment and PPE for locating work
  • Describe different locating methods (passive, active, radar, electronic markers, etc.)
  • Explain troubleshooting steps when facing conflicts or equipment issues
  • Follow emergency and damage prevention procedures
  • Apply safe excavation practices, including tolerance zones and hand exposure
