What the rules ask of drivers and shippers
The key rules, by task:
- Dangerous goods. Anyone who handles, offers for transport or transports dangerous goods must be trained and hold a TDG training certificate, or work under the direct supervision of someone who does. A road certificate expires after 36 months.
- Hours of service. Under the federal Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations, a driver south of 60°N may not drive after 13 hours of driving or 14 hours on duty in a day.
- Trip inspections. In Alberta, buses and trucks with a licensed mass over 11,794 kg must complete trip inspection reports under National Safety Code (NSC) Standard 13.
- Cargo securement. In Alberta, trucks with a licensed mass over 4,500 kg must secure cargo under NSC Standard 10.
Where to start
If you ship or haul dangerous goods, start with Transportation of Dangerous Goods - TDG, a 3-hour road course on classes, labelling, shipping documents and loading. Compare other TDG courses.
Drivers can add Hours of Service - Canada (about 4 hours) on the federal rules, logbooks, cycles and exemptions. Daily Pre-Trip Inspection (about 60 minutes) uses video to show the inspection and air brake test, and Cargo Securement (about 90 minutes) covers NSC Standard 10, with optional modules for loads such as logs, metal coils and intermodal containers.
Before you buy
Two things to check:
- Your employer issues your TDG training certificate once it is satisfied you are adequately trained. The course gives you the training and a completion record.
- The TDG course covers road transport. Shipping by air needs separate training.
