This online practice exam can be used to assess your welding knowledge prior to challenging the red seal journeyman exam.
What You'll Learn
- Welding Safety – This section of the exam assesses general safety in the welding trade as it relates to fumes, equipment and consumables.
- Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) – This section of the exam assesses general knowledge relating to shielded metal arc welding including polarity, electrode numbering and equipment needs.
- Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) – This section of the exam assesses general knowledge of gas metal arc welding including wire selection, gas selection and equipment needs.
- Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) – This section of the exam assesses general knowledge of gas tungsten arc welding including gases used, equipment needs, tungsten selection and filler wire numbering and composition.
- Oxy-Fuel Processes – This section of the exam assesses general knowledge of cutting and welding operations including cylinder safety, regulators, tip selection and filler wire classifications.
- Steel Fabrication – This section of the exam assesses general knowledge of steel fabrication including layout, fabrication equipment, measuring and tools.

- If your mark on this self-assessment is lower than 75%, you will receive a detailed training plan within 7 days containing topic areas for further review in addition to study resources. If your mark on this self-assessment is 75% or higher, you will benefit from a general review of all Red Seal Welding topics. Success on these questions will NOT automatically result in Red Seal certification. These questions are intended to be used as an assessment of trade knowledge while preparing to challenge the red seal examination. Is there a time limit for online courses?
Everyone learns at a different pace and everyone retains information differently. When you take a course online, you go at your own speed. If you get to a certain point and don’t fully understand the material, you can pause and go back for a review. On the other hand, if everything makes perfect sense, you can go straight through the entire course right to the test.
How does virtual proctoring/testing with webcam monitoring work?
When you start your test, you will be monitored via your webcam. If you disappear from the screen or appear to be consulting another device or other material, you will be disqualified from the course.
