Who this course is for

This course is for workers who use fall protection in construction or general industry and want a solid grounding in the theory. It is not tied to one province. You need 80% to pass, you get three attempts, and you receive a certificate of completion when you finish.

What you will learn

The course explains how fall protection equipment works, what to check before you use it, and what to do if someone falls.

  • Your legal responsibilities as a worker
  • Anchors, connectors, harnesses and body holding devices, and how to inspect and care for them
  • Freefall and the clearance you need below you
  • Tools and equipment at heights, plus other PPE
  • Emergency response plans and rescue, including self-rescue and suspension trauma

Pair it with hands-on training

Fall protection rules are set by each province, and most require hands-on practice or site-specific instruction from your employer as well as the theory:

  • Alberta: Section 141 of the OHS Code requires your employer to train you before you work where fall protection is required. Training must include practice inspecting, fitting, adjusting and connecting equipment, and practice in emergency response, plus the fall hazards at that site.
  • British Columbia: Before you enter an area with a risk of falling, your employer must instruct you in the fall protection system and procedures for that area. WorkSafeBC's guideline says simply completing a fall protection course is not enough.
  • Ontario: construction workers need Working at Heights training from a provider approved by the Chief Prevention Officer, including an in-person practical module. This course does not meet that requirement.

Which fall protection course should you pick?

The catalogue has several fall protection courses. Check the title, length and province before you buy:

  • This course, Fall Protection Fundamentals: about 90 minutes. A shorter general course for construction and general industry.
  • Fall Protection (Alberta): about 3 hours. Covers Alberta legislation, the five harness classes, free fall and clearance calculations, and putting on a harness.
  • Fall Protection (BC): about 240 minutes. Theory only, developed for BC legislation. You register for a practical assessment at the end, and the official certificate comes after you pass it.
  • Fall Protection (Can): about 60 minutes. A basic introduction to fall protection systems.

About This Course

As with any hazard, it’s not uncommon for experienced workers to become overconfident; when you’ve been doing a job for a long time, you get complacent—but falls from heights can happen to anyone at any time and are always dangerous. In two seconds, the average person will freefall 20m at 70km/hr. A fall like that will, at the very least, cause severe damage, and at worst a fatality.

In this course, we’ll cover everything from hazards to equipment to rescue and working at heights. By the end of the course, you’ll:

  • Know the hazards of working at heights
  • Understand your legislative responsibilities as a worker
  • Be familiar with the kind of fall protection equipment you’ll encounter, as well as how to care for and inspect it
    • This will include
      • Anchors
      • Connectors
      • Harnesses, and
  • Know how to assess and respond to an incident when working at heights

Fall Protection Fundamentals - Working at Heights: common questions

Does this course meet Ontario Working at Heights requirements?

No. If you work on an Ontario construction project and use fall protection, you need a program approved by the Chief Prevention Officer, delivered by an approved provider, with an in-person practical module.

Does this fall protection course include hands-on training?

No. It is online theory only. Alberta requires practice inspecting, fitting, adjusting and connecting fall arrest equipment, and BC requires site-specific instruction from your employer, so plan for that separately.

How long does the course take?

About 90 minutes. You need 80% to pass, and you get 3 attempts.

How often do I need to retake fall protection training?

The course listing does not state an expiry date. Some provinces set one: Ontario Working at Heights training is valid for 3 years, and Nova Scotia requires fall protection training at least every 3 years.

Can I take the OSHA fall protection course if I work in Canada?

OSHA is part of the US Department of Labor, and its course follows US rules. Canadian workplaces fall under provincial, territorial or federal Canadian law, so choose a course built for where you work.
