Fire Extinguisher Use & Safety (OSHA)

Fire extinguishers are one of the most common safety tools in the workplace and can stop a small fire from becoming a major disaster. But they're only effective when used at the right time, on the right type of fire, and with the right technique. Without proper training, workers risk spreading the fire, wasting the extinguishing agent, or putting themselves in serious danger. In this course, we'll cover when to use a fire extinguisher (and when to evacuate), the different classes of fires and matching extinguisher types, and how to operate one safely using the PASS method.

About This Course

Fire extinguishers are a critical first line of defense when a small fire breaks out, giving workers the ability to act quickly before a situation gets out of hand. Knowing when and how to use one is just as important as having one available — the wrong choice can spread flames, create new hazards, or delay a safe evacuation. In this course, we'll cover how to make smart, confident decisions when facing a fire.

In this course we'll cover:

  • When to use a fire extinguisher
  • The different classes of fires and which extinguisher types are designed for each
  • The components of a fire extinguisher and how they work
  • The PASS method for safe and effective use
  • Post-incident steps, including monitoring for reflash, recharging, and documentation

Everyone learns at a different pace and everyone retains information differently. When you take a course online, you go at your own speed. On the other hand, if everything makes perfect sense, you can go straight through the entire course right to the test.

How does virtual proctoring/testing with webcam monitoring work?

When you start your test, you will be monitored via your webcam. If you disappear from the screen or appear to be consulting another device or other material, you will be disqualified from the course. The company responsible for virtual proctoring is Integrity Advocate. You can find out more about how their system works here.
