Railcar Mover Safety (CAN)

Railcar movers keep product moving on industrial tracks, sidings, and rail yards, spotting and repositioning cars in spaces shared by workers, vehicles, and other equipment. When securement, coupling procedures, or communication break down, the result can be an uncontrolled movement, a caught-between injury, or a derailment that reaches occupied areas. Training is what gives operators the knowledge to catch a coupler defect during inspection, hold the line on blue flag protection, and stop short of trouble at a public crossing. Learners will cover railcar mover types, pre-shift inspection, mounting and dismounting rails, coupling and uncoupling, braking systems, blue flags and derails, safe speeds and public crossings, hand signals and radio communication, PPE requirements, and lessons from investigated incidents.

About This Course

Railcar movers are powerful pieces of industrial equipment that work in rail yards, sidings, and industrial tracks where heavy loads, tight clearances, and shared traffic create serious hazards. When something goes wrong, the results can be severe, including uncontrolled movements, coupling injuries, crossing incidents, and derailments. These outcomes are preventable when operators understand their equipment and follow safe operating procedures.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify the major components of a railcar mover
  • Describe the steps in a pre-shift inspection
  • Explain the procedures for coupling and uncoupling railcars
  • Recognize the different types of braking systems on a railcar mover
  • Describe blue flag protection and when it is required
  • Explain the rules for operating at public crossings
  • List the required PPE for railcar mover operations
  • Identify the hand signals used in rail yard switching
  • Recognize the common causes of uncontrolled movements and how to prevent them
