SCBA Respiratory Protection (OSHA)
Self-contained breathing apparatus gives workers a portable supply of clean air, making it one of the few types of respiratory protection that can be worn in oxygen-deficient and IDLH atmospheres. These are also the environments where small mistakes carry the greatest consequences, because a poor facepiece seal, a skipped inspection, or running low on air can become life-threatening within minutes. Proper training makes the difference, since an SCBA only protects you when it fits correctly, functions properly, and is used the way OSHA and the manufacturer intend. In this course, we'll cover the respiratory hazards that call for an SCBA, how the equipment works, the requirements under 29 CFR 1910.134, and how to fit, wear, inspect, clean, refill, and store your unit.

What You'll Learn
- Respiratory Hazards: Dusts, Fibers, Mists, Fumes, Biological Contaminants, Gases, and Vapors
- Oxygen Deficiency and IDLH Conditions
- Controlling Respiratory Hazards and the Hierarchy of Controls
- Choosing Your Respirator: Air-Purifying vs. Atmosphere-Supplying
- How an SCBA Works and Its Main Components
- SCBA Requirements Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134
- Respiratory Protection Programs, Training, and Medical Evaluation
- Fit Testing and User Seal Checks
- Donning, Doffing, and Working Safely in Your SCBA
- Inspecting, Cleaning, and Storing Your SCBA
- Handling and Refilling Cylinders
About This Course
Respiratory hazards show up in workplaces across almost every industry, from dusts and fumes to gases, vapors, and oxygen-deficient air. When an atmosphere is immediately dangerous to life and health, a self-contained breathing apparatus is one of the only types of respirator that can keep you safe, because it supplies your own clean air rather than relying on the air around you. This course covers the hazards that require an SCBA, how the equipment works, the OSHA requirements that apply to its use, and how to fit, wear, inspect, and care for your unit.
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
• Identify and describe the various respiratory hazards you may be exposed to during your work
• Describe how SCBAs work, and identify the OSHA requirements that apply to their use
• Describe the basic steps involved in properly fitting, donning, doffing, and wearing your SCBA, including managing your air supply and responding to an equipment malfunction
• Define “user seal checks” and describe the basic steps for performing one
• Identify and describe the basic steps for properly inspecting, cleaning, refilling, and storing your SCBA
