Wildfire Safety
Wildfires are becoming more frequent, more severe, and more widespread across Canada and the United States, creating serious risks for workers, property, and entire communities. When ignition sources aren't controlled, evacuation plans aren't in place, or smoke exposure isn't managed, the consequences can range from costly equipment damage and lost productivity to severe health effects, injuries, or loss of life. Proper training helps workers and employers take wildfire risk seriously and prepare before an emergency happens. This course covers how to prevent ignitions at work, how to protect property through fuel management, and how to work safely in wildfire smoke.

About This Course
Wildfires are becoming more frequent, more severe, and more widespread across Canada and the United States. Longer fire seasons bring more days of poor air quality, extreme heat, and evacuation risks, all of which directly affect workplace safety. Workplaces now need to treat wildfire exposure as an ongoing occupational hazard, with clear plans for prevention, response, and recovery.
By the end of this course, learners should be able to:
- Describe wildfire types and behaviour, and explain how weather and fuel affect spread
- Name workplace ignition hazards
- Identify appropriate workplace wildfire controls and implement strategies to reduce the risk of sparking a fire
- Interpret air quality indicators (AQHI in Canada and AQI in the US) and make work-adjustment decisions
- Develop and rehearse an evacuation plan for a given site, including multiple routes, triggers, roles, communications, and special populations
- Assess emergency response plans and create an evacuation bag
- Recognize stress reactions and recall appropriate supports
