Who this course is for

Anyone who handles, offers for transport or transports dangerous goods by road in Canada must be trained and hold a TDG training certificate, or work under the direct supervision of someone who does.

What you will learn

The course takes about 3 hours, online at your own pace. You need 80% on the final test, and you can repeat the course two more times if needed. When you pass, you download and print a certificate of completion.

  • Legislation
  • Chemical hazards and the classes of dangerous goods
  • Packaging and labelling
  • Shipping documents
  • Segregation and vehicle loading
  • Accidents and Emergency Response Assistance Plans (ERAPs)

How you get your TDG certificate

Under Part 6 of the federal TDG Regulations, your employer issues your TDG training certificate once it is satisfied you are adequately trained for your duties. This course gives you the training and a completion record to support that. If you are self-employed, you issue your own certificate.

A road, rail or marine TDG certificate expires 36 months after it is issued (24 months for air). Certificates don't transfer between employers, and you must show yours, or a copy, if an inspector asks.

Before you buy

Two things to check:

  • This course covers ground transport. Air shipping follows ICAO/IATA rules and needs separate training.
  • It doesn't prepare you for Class 1 (explosives), Class 6.2 (infectious substances) or Class 7 (radioactive materials). Those need extra training.

Which TDG course should you pick?

The catalogue has several TDG courses. Here is how they differ:

  • TDG: Transportation of Dangerous Goods (2025): about 2 hours, road transport, stated as current with the 2025 TDG amendments. Includes chapters on exemptions and cross-border transport.
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG): about 3.5 hours, focused on Canadian roads. A separate proctored version has the same content and price.
  • TDG 2024: about 3 hours, written for shippers, carriers and receivers.
  • ICC Shipping Dangerous Goods by Air: about 4 hours. Air shipping follows ICAO/IATA rules, and you need a physical copy of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.

About This Course

In Canada, federal and provincial and territorial legislation governs the transportation of dangerous goods. Anyone who handles, offers for transport or transports dangerous goods is legally required to have training in the transportation of dangerous goods.

Once you have completed this course, you will be better informed about the importance of complying with the regulations for the transportation of dangerous goods.

Although goods can be transported by road, rail, air and water, this course only covers regulations for ground transportation of dangerous goods. There are nine classes of dangerous goods and at the end of this course, you will be qualified to handle all of them except Classes 1, 6.2 and 7 as handling these classes requires additional training.

You should ask your supervisor or employer about special equipment, site specific or job specific training for the transportation of dangerous goods.

Once you have completed the course, you will take the final test. You must achieve at least 80% to receive a certificate of completion. Don’t worry - if you don’t pass the first time, you can keep trying until you do.

Transportation of Dangerous Goods - TDG: common questions

Is this course a TDG certification?

It gives you TDG training and a certificate of completion. Under the federal regulations, your employer issues the actual TDG training certificate once it is satisfied you are adequately trained.

Can I handle dangerous goods before I have a TDG certificate?

Only in the presence and under the direct supervision of someone who is trained and holds a certificate. Transport Canada says direct supervision does not include camera surveillance or live monitoring.

Does this course cover shipping dangerous goods by air?

No. It covers ground transport only. Air shipping follows ICAO and IATA rules, and an air training certificate expires after 24 months instead of 36.

What is the difference between WHMIS and TDG?

WHMIS covers the hazards of products used in the workplace. TDG covers handling, shipping and transporting dangerous goods. If your job involves both, take WHMIS 2025 as well.

What happens if I fail the final test?

You need 80% to pass. You can repeat the course two more times if you don't reach the pass mark on your first try.
