Cargo Securement Core Program
Proper cargo securement is one of the most critical aspects of commercial transportation. A poorly secured load can lead to collisions, injuries, fines, and damaged goods, all of which threaten both safety and business operations. On the other hand, when drivers are trained and attentive, they can consistently secure loads in a way that is safe, legal, and efficient. This course is designed to help you build the knowledge and skills to avoid common securement mistakes and ensure every load reaches its destination without incident.

About This Course
The training begins with an introduction to the regulatory framework that governs cargo securement in North America. Learners will become familiar with key organizations such as the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA), the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), the North American Cargo Securement Standard (NACSS), and the National Safety Code’s Standard 10, as well as Alberta’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Regulation (AR121/2009) and Alberta’s Commercial Vehicle Certificate and Insurance Regulation (AR314/2002). Understanding these authorities and their rules gives drivers a foundation for compliance and provides direction on where to turn for guidance.
From there, the course explores the practical side of securement. You will learn about the different devices and systems used to secure cargo, the methods available for various types of loads, and how to carry out inspections throughout a trip. This course will explore more about front end structures, how to best utilize them, and how to best distribute cargo weight. Additional chapters focus on safe handling practices, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and the unique securement requirements for specialized cargo like logs, metal coils, vehicles, and intermodal containers. By the end, you will have the tools to plan, execute, and verify securement procedures confidently, helping protect yourself, your cargo, and everyone else on the road.
