Skid Steer Loader Operator Safety (OSHA)

Skid steers, often known by the brand name "Bobcat," are versatile machines essential to construction, landscaping, and material handling, capable of lifting, digging, pushing, and pulling in spaces where larger equipment cannot go. When used recklessly or by an operator who skips inspections and ignores safe procedures, these same machines can quickly become deadly, with tip-overs, crushing incidents, and rollovers among the most serious risks. Proper training is what separates safe, productive operation from a preventable tragedy. This course covers the parts and safety features of a skid steer, pre-operation inspections, common hazards and how to control them, required PPE, and the safe movement and travel procedures every operator needs to know.

About This Course

When operated safely, a skid steer (often known by the brand name "Bobcat") is one of the most versatile machines on a worksite, able to lift, dig, push, and pull a wide range of materials in tight quarters. In the hands of an overconfident or untrained operator, though, that same versatility can turn into a deadly hazard. This course gives you the general knowledge and safe operating procedures you need to run a skid steer confidently while avoiding the common pitfalls that lead to tip-overs, crushing injuries, and other serious incidents.

This course is designed to precede practical operator training and site-specific training.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Name the basic parts of a skid steer
  • Name its specific safety features
  • Describe a thorough pre-operation inspection
  • Recognize the difference between safe and unsafe skid steer movements
