Snowplow Safety (CAN)

Snowplow operators keep Canadian roads, highways, and parking lots passable through the worst winter conditions, often working alone at night during storms and on ice. When safe procedures are ignored, the consequences are severe, including struck-by and backing incidents, rollovers on ice, hydraulic injection injuries, cold-related illness, and collisions with an unpredictable public. Proper training gives operators the knowledge to recognize these hazards and respond correctly when they are the only person in the truck. This training covers worker rights and the Internal Responsibility System, the regulations and standards governing winter road-maintenance work, plow equipment and hydraulic hazards, cold-weather preparation and pre-trip inspection, safe plowing and backing, winter driving and skid recovery, personal safety, and emergency response.

About This Course

Snowplow operators take on some of the most demanding work of the winter, clearing highways, roads, and parking lots when conditions are at their worst: at night, in storms, on ice, and often completely alone. The equipment is heavy, sightlines are poor, and the public is unpredictable, which is exactly why proper training matters. This course prepares operators of both truck-mounted municipal plows and pickup-mounted contractor plows to work safely, from pre-trip inspection all the way through emergency response.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the Internal Responsibility System and your rights as a worker
  • Identify the laws, codes, and standards that apply to snowplow operation in Canada
  • Identify common plow types and name their key components
  • Recognize the hazards of hydraulic systems and spreaders
  • Explain how to prepare a vehicle for cold weather and perform a pre-trip inspection
  • Describe safe hookup, ballast, plowing, backing, and snow-placement practices
  • Recognize hazardous winter road conditions and explain how to respond to skids and whiteouts
  • Recognize the signs of cold stress and fatigue, and identify the required personal protective equipment
  • Explain how to respond to breakdowns, collisions, hydraulic injuries, and carbon monoxide risk
