Confined Space Safety - US
Confined spaces like tanks, silos, manholes, and trenches present hazards that can turn deadly in seconds, from toxic atmospheres to engulfment and oxygen deficiency. Ignoring proper procedures puts both entrants and would-be rescuers at serious risk. This awareness course introduces the fundamentals of confined space safety under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146, covering team roles, permits, atmospheric monitoring, PPE, and emergency response. Site-specific training and practical evaluation are required before entry.

About This Course
Confined spaces present some of the most serious hazards a worker can face on the job, with risks ranging from toxic atmospheres and engulfment to oxygen deficiency and entrapment. Understanding what makes a space "confined," who needs to be involved in entry, and how to control hazards is essential for anyone whose work brings them near these environments. This course introduces the fundamentals of confined space safety as outlined in OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.146 – Permit-Required Confined Spaces.
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Define "confined space"
- Describe the features of a confined space
- Name the team members needed when entering a confined space
- List each team member's responsibilities
- Explain the steps you must take before entry
- Name the personal protective equipment (PPE) you'll need
- Discuss how to work safely in confined spaces
- Identify hazards and hazard controls
- List emergency response measures
- Compare self, non-entry, and entry rescue
Workplaces must provide further site-specific training, in-person practice, and practical evaluations before any worker enters a confined space.
