Who this course is for
This course is for workers in Canada who enter confined spaces, work beside them or are part of an entry team. It covers the whole team: the employer, entry supervisor, attendant and entrant, so everyone learns what the others are responsible for.
It also works as a starting point before role-specific entry, monitor or rescue training.
What you will learn
The course description says it follows the Canadian Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, and it explains how rules differ between jurisdictions. Topics:
- What makes a space a confined space, and the Canadian regulatory framework
- Roles and responsibilities of the employer, entrant, attendant and entry supervisor

Roles on a confined space entry team
The course uses the term attendant for the person who stays outside. Alberta calls this person a tending worker and BC calls them a standby person. The core duties are similar:
- Stays outside, at or near the entrance. Ontario's guideline says the attendant does not enter the space.
- Keeps in contact with the workers inside and checks on their well-being. In BC that is at least every 20 minutes in low and moderate hazard atmospheres, and continuously in high hazard spaces.
- Has a way to call rescue right away.
Which confined space course fits you?
If the space could contain hydrogen sulfide, add the H2S course (about 2 hours). Other confined space options:
- This course: about 1 hour. Covers the full entry team, permits, testing, hazard controls and rescue options.
- Confined Space Entry (Alberta): about 2.5 hours. For workers who work inside confined spaces in Alberta.
- Confined Space Entry and Monitor (SCS): about 3 hours. For workers who perform tending worker duties for people inside a confined space.
- Confined Space Awareness Entry and Attendant: about 90 minutes. Entry and attendant training.
- Confined Space Hazards for Canada: about 45 minutes. Focuses on the risks and your employer's procedures.
Before you buy
- This is online theory training. Your employer must still train you on your duties and the specific space, and Ontario's guideline says hands-on training with the safety equipment should be an essential part.

Is there a time limit for online courses?
Everyone learns at a different pace and everyone retains information differently. When you take a course online, you go at your own speed. If you get to a certain point and don’t fully understand the material, you can pause and go back for a review. On the other hand, if everything makes perfect sense, you can go straight through the entire course right to the test.
How does virtual proctoring/testing with webcam monitoring work?
When you start your test, you will be monitored via your webcam. If you disappear from the screen or appear to be consulting another device or other material, you will be disqualified from the course.
