Who this course is for

This course is for people who operate or work from mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs), such as scissor lifts and boom lifts, and for anyone who needs the theory part of aerial lift training before a hands-on check-out.

What you will learn

The course takes about 60 minutes, online at your own pace. You need 80% to pass, and you get a certificate of completion.

  • Legislation and regulatory requirements
  • Hazard recognition
  • MEWP types, features and safety equipment
  • Inspections, maintenance and standard operating procedures
  • Fall protection on the platform

How the CSA B354 standards fit in

The course is built to CSA standards. In Canada, the current MEWP standards are a 2017 series, reaffirmed in 2022. They replaced the older B354.1, B354.2 and B354.4 standards, which were withdrawn in 2018.

CSA sorts MEWPs by group, based on where the platform can sit relative to the tipping line, and by type, based on how the machine travels. CSA says your training record should name both.

  • CSA B354.6:17 covers design, calculations, safety requirements and test methods.
  • CSA B354.7:17 covers safety principles, inspection, maintenance and operation.
  • CSA B354.8:17 covers operator (driver) training and familiarization.

Pair it with hands-on training

Operators also need practical training on the lift they'll actually use, which your employer arranges:

  • Alberta: Under section 256 of the OHS Code, you must not operate powered mobile equipment unless you are trained, have shown your competency to a competent worker your employer designates, know the equipment's operating instructions, and are authorized by your employer.
  • British Columbia: If you are asked to run an elevating work platform you are not familiar with, WorkSafeBC says your employer must give you upgrade training so you can show you can operate that machine.
  • Proof of training: WorkSafeBC notes that CSA standards generally require you to carry your proof of training while you operate.

Which aerial lift course should you pick?

The catalogue has several aerial lift courses. Check the title, length and jurisdiction before you buy.

  • This course, MEWP Training: about 60 minutes. Short CSA-based theory with a fall protection module, in English or Spanish.
  • Aerial Work Platform (AWP) Certification: about 4 hours. Covers scissor, push-around and boom lifts, provincial requirements, and a practical evaluation checklist for your supervisor.
  • Vehicle Mounted Aerial Lifts (CAN): about 90 minutes. For bucket trucks.

About This Course

Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) Training: common questions

Can I get aerial lift training fully online?

You can do the theory online. Alberta requires you to show your competency to a competent worker your employer designates, and BC requires training on any platform you are not familiar with.

Does this course cover scissor lifts and boom lifts?

It covers MEWPs as a group, including their types and features. Your hands-on familiarization should be on the specific lift you will use.

Do I need fall protection in a scissor lift?

In Alberta, you use a travel restraint system on a scissor lift unless the manufacturer allows guardrails alone and the lift is on a firm, substantially level surface. In BC, a scissor lift on a firm, level surface is exempt from fall arrest when all the manufacturer's guardrails and chains are in place.

How often do I need MEWP retraining?

WorkSafeBC says the standards set no fixed interval. Your employer decides based on your performance, and retraining is needed after an incident, equipment changes or new conditions.

Is there a course for bucket trucks?

Yes. Bucket trucks are vehicle-mounted aerial devices, which fall under a separate CSA standard, C225. See Vehicle Mounted Aerial Lifts (CAN).

When you start your test, you will be monitored via your webcam. If you disappear from the screen or appear to be consulting another device or other material, you will be disqualified from the course. The company responsible for virtual proctoring is Integrity Advocate. You can find out more about how their system works here.
